I am inspired by the Catholic Church’s focus on helping nations burdened by debt, which often leads to severe poverty for many individuals.

This brings to mind the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant in Matthew 18:21–35, where a servant who was forgiven a large debt refuses to forgive the smaller debt of another. In the parable, the Lord asks: “Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellow servant, even as I had pity on thee?”

As highlighted in the attached article, Pope Francis echoes this call for mercy on a global level. His and the Catholic Church’s efforts to relieve the debt of struggling nations reflect Christ-like compassion and a commitment to “enhancing the common good,” as outlined in the US Conference of Catholic Bishops investment guidelines and in Bountiful’s Catholic Investment Framework.
