The name of “Climate Week NYC” should be changed. My proposal: The Summit for Saving Our Global Home.

Why is this better? First, “Saving Our Global Home” echoes the respected US Conference of Catholic Bishops investment guidelines and resonates with many faith communities’ principles. While not overtly religious, this language signals to people of faith groups that their voices are welcome.

Second, the phrase “Global Home” puts people at the center of the discussion. Scientists estimate there are 100 billion planets in the universe, but this particular planet is worth saving because it’s our home—it’s where we raise our families, experience growth and fulfillment, and (as religious people believe) learn to love God.

Finally, “Climate Week” feels cold and technical, as if it’s meant for meteorologists, not for those who care about people and their environment. “Saving Our Global Home,” on the other hand, speaks to the heart, and inspires action.
